hey can anyone tell me why this happen ..In little technically way…Why Raspberry Pi foundation prefer SD card over hard disk ….
January 2, 2015 at 2:15 pm #10391Ligo GeorgeKeymasterNot even in Raspberry Pi, nowadays Hard Disks are getting replaced with Solid State Drives in latest computers. It has the following advantages.
- More Durable
- Faster Performance
- Less Power Consumption
- Light Weight
- Long Life
- Cost Efficient for Long Run (energy savings, long life, performance)
- Very Low Heat Dissipation
- No noise is produced as there is no moving parts

January 2, 2015 at 2:36 pm #10393mohammad146Participanti know how to load Image in sd card so…But i am asking Why they gone for SD Card…
January 2, 2015 at 2:45 pm #10394Ligo GeorgeKeymasterI already posted the reason for choosing SD Card. Windows will not work with Raspberry Pi. Operating system is working on Hardware. So hardware must be compatible with Operating System. We can only use OS customized for Raspberry Pi
January 2, 2015 at 2:53 pm #10395mohammad146Participantya okk So say SSDs are much much morefaster than SD card ..So why they didnt choose that…?
January 2, 2015 at 2:57 pm #10396Ligo GeorgeKeymasterSD Card can treated as a Solid State Drive (SSD).
Usually we call SSD for drives we are using in computers instead of Hard Disk. Memory Cards are usually smaller than SSD.
Although Memory Cards and SSDs are using same technology, their application, functionality and size are distinctive.
January 2, 2015 at 3:08 pm #10399mohammad146Participanthmmm can you tell me how to reduce the size of an OS…
January 2, 2015 at 3:16 pm #10400Ligo GeorgeKeymasterYour questions are going outside the scope of this topic. You can open a new topic for asking such questions.
Size depends on the Operating System you are using. You can check sizes of different operating systems. You may customize it to reduce size by removing unwanted features. If you want to customize Linux, please go to a Linux forum.
January 2, 2015 at 3:32 pm #10401mohammad146Participantnah…its related to this…How raspberry reduce the OS size so it can even download in SD card
January 2, 2015 at 3:33 pm #10402mohammad146Participantsorry it can not download but run Entirely in SD card
January 2, 2015 at 3:47 pm #10403Ligo GeorgeKeymasterBut there is no relation with Operating System Size and SD Card. SD card is chosen because of its advantages. Up to 512GB SD cards are available in the market.
